The Howgills and Limestone Trail

HALT STAGE 2 - Waitby to Bowderdale

Starting point: Waitby (NY 751082)
Distance: 7.75 miles
Ascent: 1020'
Date: Sunday 7th August 2011

All of the photographs on these Gallery pages were taken by Derek Cockell when he and his wife Alison helped to test walk the route after it was devised by David and Heather Pitt. The test walk took place during the summer and autumn of 2011 and spring and summer 2012. Please note that all photos in this gallery are copyright of Derek Cockell and are not to be used without express permission.

Route: From Waitby head southwest along a quiet road towards Smardale Hall and then walk along the dismantled railway line to cross Smardale Gill Viaduct. Continue along the trackbed and descend to Smardale Bridge. Cross the bridge and then head south then southeast to cross the A685 into Ravenstonedale. The route now heads west to Weasdale. Follow signs to Weasdale Nurseries and find a footpath through the Nurseries. Emerging on to open fell the route passes through Scar Sikes Farm before a farm track leads eventually over Bowderdale Beck to Bowderdale Foot.
